About Molasses Pictures

Molasses Pictures was founded by writer and director Katrina Channells. Katrina's feature script was selected for the first round of entrants into the Originate program with VicScreen in 2021. Katrina was selected for the Writers Write program and the Local2Global Directors' program supported by the Australian Directors’ Guild in 2022. Katrina co-wrote and directed ‘Unsettled’ which was shortlisted for Rhode Island International Film Festival and selected for Flickerfest 2024. ‘Unsettled’ won Best Foreign short at the Hollywood Women’s Film Institute, Best Tragedy at the International Short Cinema Festival in Ecuador and Best Female Direction (Short) at Vancouver International Movie Awards. The film also took out a silver Australian Cinematography Society award. Katrina’s feature documentary ‘Leaving Allen Street’ aired on ABC. The film screened at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival and won the ‘Audience Choice Award’. Her documentary series ‘Stingray Sisters’ screened in Vancouver, London, Glasgow, Iceland and was released on SBS/NITV. Katrina’s Virtual Reality series 'Speak of Country/Yuin Djama Dhugan' was created in collaboration with Indigenous Yuin Nation storytellers from the coast of NSW and was selected for the ‘Multiverse’ exhibition that was set to exhibit at Sydney Carriageworks and Melbourne Museum in 2021. The Virtual Reality project went on to Cinequest Film & VR festival in Silicon Valley and ACMI as part of Melbourne International Film Festival. Katrina collaboratively wrote and directed ‘Milly’, a narrative short film shot in Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory. The film was selected for the Melbourne Women’s Film Festival 2022 and screened at the Garifuna International Film Festival.

Joe Hinchliffe is a producer and freelance journalist who contributes frequently to Guardian Australia. Joe has co-written and produced a variety of films under the banner of Molasses Pictures. These productions have screened globally and locally. Katrina and Joe are developing a slate of documentaries together.

Over the course of his career in journalism, Joe has worked for The Age, had stints as a stringer with Reuters and Australian Associated Press, appeared on news and current affairs programs including Al Jazeera, NBC News, the ABC’s 7:30, Radio National Breakfast and on The Project.
