About Molasses Pictures / Katrina Channells
Molasses Pictures was founded by writer, director and editor Katrina Channells. Katrina works with creatives and crew across Victoria and Queensland to bring stories to life. Katrina was selected for the Writers Write program and the Local2Global Directors' program supported by the Australian Directors’ Guild in 2022. Katrina’s films have premiered at Melbourne International Film Festival, Cinequest in San Jose, St Kilda Film Festival, Flickerfest, Byron Bay International Film Festival and have aired on ABC, SBS and NITV.
Katrina was selected for a writer’s attachment on Darby and Joan Series Two, which then led to a director’s attachment with dir Rachel Ward. Katrina's latest short, 'Flame,' won an award at this year's Oscar Qualifying Flickerfest in Sydney. Katrina directed short film ‘Unsettled’. The film was shortlisted for the Rhode Island International Film Festival, premiered at Flickerfest, and was selected for the St Kilda Film Festival. Katrina directed short film ‘Not To Be’. The film premiered at the Byron Bay Film Festival and won Best Australian Short and the People's Choice award at the Sparrowland Film Festival. Katrina’s feature documentary ‘Leaving Allen Street’ aired on ABC. The film screened at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival and won the ‘Audience Choice Award’. Her documentary series ‘Stingray Sisters’ screened in Vancouver, London, Glasgow, Iceland and was released on SBS/NITV. Katrina’s Virtual Reality series 'Speak of Country/Yuin Djama Dhugan' was created in collaboration with Indigenous Yuin Nation storytellers from the coast of NSW and was selected for the ‘Multiverse’ exhibition that was set to exhibit at Sydney Carriageworks and Melbourne Museum in 2021. The Virtual Reality project went on to Cinequest Film & VR festival in Silicon Valley and ACMI as part of Melbourne International Film Festival. Katrina collaboratively wrote and directed ‘Milly’, a narrative short film shot in Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory. The film was selected for the Melbourne Women’s Film Festival 2022 and screened at the Garifuna International Film Festival.
