We’re excited to announce our campaign for Melbourne University’s Faculty of Fine Arts and Music (formerly Victorian College of the Arts) is due to be released in cinemas across Victoria. After screening at the 2018 Melbourne Film Festival earlier this year, we are thrilled the campaign will once again be on the big screen!

We thoroughly enjoyed working with the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music on the films, which feature profiles of three of the University’s most established and influential alumni. Each subject was fantastic to work with and provided incredible insight into their respective fields within the Arts. The campaign features the world renowned artist Patricia Piccinini; Associate Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Benjamin Northey; and head of the Wilin Centre Richard Frankland. Each share their fascinating individual stories and it was a pleasure to get to know them all.

Education Services Australia (ESA) works collaboratively in the interests of all Australian educators and provides digital teaching and learning resources. For the last few months we’ve been working alongside ESA to develop films that will help implement the important Respectful Relationships program.

“Respectful Relationships is about embedding a culture of respect and equality across our entire community, from our classrooms to staff-rooms, sporting fields, fetes and social events … Together, we can lead the way in saying yes to respect and equality, and creating genuine and lasting change” - Victorian State Government, Department of Education and Training

Schools play a crucial role in creating a culture of respect and equality and Respectful Relationships works to change harmful behaviours by actively engaging and promoting these cultures in the schoolyard and classroom. We’re excited to be working alongside such a worthwhile program and are pleased to be producing films that can encourage this change.

We have been busy this month continuing production of our series featuring the Artificial Reef Project off the coast of Portarlington, Victoria. Working alongside The City of Greater Geelong and the National Centre for Coasts and Climate (NCCC), we’ve been capturing the awe-inspiring journey of manufacturers, researchers, community members and labourers to position 100+ steel cages along the bay floor.

Filled with organic matter such as scallop and mussel shells sourced from the local area, the cages will act as a protector to what before was an increasingly deteriorating coastline. Our team has captured this battle against coastal climate change from sea and sky, using drones and underwater photography to document this innovative project. We can’t wait to move this project into post production and begin finalising the series.

Our film series for VicHealth has been a blast to produce and features an array of their brilliant ‘Active Club Grant’ recipients encouraging fitness, health and wellbeing across Victoria.

Hiker from Escaping Your Comfort Zone

As we begin wrapping up post production for this campaign, it’s inspiring to look back on all the fantastic organisations and people we’ve engaged with along the way. We’ve filmed with Escaping Your Comfort Zone, a hiking group promoting body positivity in the You Yangs and had a kick with the St Kilda Football club at one of their inclusive Saints Play workshops for children with autism and children living with disability. We’ve hit the coast of Inverloch to film with Swell Mamas, an awesome mother’s group combining surfing and childcare. We were empowered by the ladies from Soccer Mums, an organisation encouraging mums to ditch the sidelines and take to the field.

After three years, our latest documentary 'Leaving Allen Street' is nearing the end of production. The episodic documentary is about a group of charismatic, intellectually disabled people leaving their institutional home and taking the reins for the first time in their lives.

The photos below are from behind the scenes filming Episode 4 of the series. Recently we filmed Greg having a play with some of the adore-able and adoptable pets at The Lost Dogs Home. Owning a pet among a great list of things, has become a possibility for Greg since we began shooting the doco three years ago. His story, along with the other stories we’ve captured have been absolutely wonderful to follow and we've met so many brilliant people along the way through our partners at OC Connections.

We're very pleased to be continuing our work with The Bridge in 2018. The Bridge is a leading disability services provider in Melbourne's South-East and we've been telling the stories of the organisation for the last three years. Recently we visited the three branches of the organisation, The Bridge Employment, The Bridge Connects and The Bridge Works. Below are some moments we captured showcasing the organisation's commitment to empowerment, choice, support and advocacy. 

This year's video campaign will focus on two of these services, The Bridge Connects and The Bridge Employment. We're looking forward to working closely with the team again to develop some new stories and share the successes of the organisation and the people they support. 

The iconic Melbourne Film Festival is underway for 2018 and we're elevated to say that Yarn will be on the big screen. Our video campaign for the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, University of Melbourne (formerly VCA & MCM) will be preceding screenings across the festival. Featuring Melbourne University’s established alumni; Patricia Piccinini, Benjamin Northey and Richard Frankland.

Yarn is thrilled to be working with the National Centre for Coasts and Climate and the City of Greater Geelong to capture the incredible design, construction and installation of an artificial reef off the coast of Portarlington, Victoria. The innovative project aims to increase biodiversity, improve water quality and prevent erosion and flooding of the coastline by constructing an offshore breakwater of steel cages filled with local rock and recycled mussel shells.

We’re currently producing a series of films that follows the journey of this incredible project and the people involved, from the conception through to the construction of the reef. It’s exciting and true to the values of Yarn to produce content that promotes people and projects working to preserve our local environment. The story of a local council working together to combat the large issue of coastal climate change is one we’re eager to continue filming and look forward to showing the series later this year.

Richard Frankland is the head of the Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development; a member of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music; and the subject of our third instalment of our VCA & Conservatorium Greats campaign.

Richard is a prolific creative. A poet, musician, author and filmmaker, he's written, directed and produced over fifty video, documentary and film projects. A highly acclaimed activist, Richard was nominated for Australian of the Year in 2013 for his work with Indigenous community groups and work on lateral violence and community awareness.
